Cottage Cake

Hey there. Been a while. First let's get the important stuff out of the way.

I'm not yet pregnant. I really thought I was this last time: everything went well, I hit my temperature spike perfectly, I had some nausea and my period was about a week late. I even took 2 pregnancy tests because we (and by we I mean my parents and siblings) doubted the accuracy of the first one when my period still hadn't started several days later. Anyway, it was false hope and the symptoms must have been psychosomatic. I didn't even have time to be bummed about it at first-- work was very hectic with end of quarter crazies. So it was a week later before I could start processing it and muse about how I spent 20-some odd years trying not to get pregnant and now when I want to, it's not happening as quickly as I'd like.

Now I'm taking a short break-- I'm gonna take some time to drop a few pounds which works out because we have a timing concern. Originally the plan for our family vacation was May in Yellowstone. Some kinks developed which killed that as an option. So we had to defer and transfer. Now we're going to Orlando to Disney World the last week of October (woohoo, Halloween at Disney!) You can't fly during your third trimester. So for this window to work, I need to not get pregnant before May. So I'll start trying again when the timing works out. I've not given up. I'm determined to become a mother, one way or another.

I made the cottage cake for Jenni's birthday. It came out super cute even though I didn't full frost it:

I made her a Donald Duck card, some tiger eye and pink pearl earrings, and bought her a Dr. Who action figure set which she wrote a high-larious pictoral blog about The Doctor meeting Jane Austen. http://www.jennismith.net/wordpress/?p=139

For Micah's birthday, I ordered a CostCo cake. I suck I know. But I made up for the lack of effort. I bought him a Wii, 2 games, and extra controller with black and pink sleeves. That has pretty much sucked up our free time since but in a good way. We've been playing Mario Olympics, Wii Sports, Raving Rabbids 2, Zelda, Resident Evil, and Medal of Honor. It's so much fun and hey, anyone who doubts it being an upper body workout hasn't played the right games. Twice I've had to sleep with the heating pad on my arm because we Wii'ed for so long that I've caused myself pain and muscle knots. Even Nana has enjoyed the Wii-- we can't get her to play it but we made her a Mii and she watches us play for hrs on end.

Speaking of... Nana took a hard fall last Monday night and ended up breaking her hip. She had to have surgery for a replacement joint. So we've spent much of the last week making trips to the hospital to check in on her. She had to have blood transfusions again but she's almost back to her spunky, if even more immobile self. The doctors are releasing her tomorrow. Have I ever mentioned how much I loathe hospitals?

I didn't watch the Grammys but I have to say, the Foo Fighter's latest "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" has been playing repeatedly in my home for the last 3 weeks and I've not been sick of it yet. It's an awesome CD-- mature, musically interesting, and not exactly what you'd expect from the boys of Foo. I love it. Check it out if you have the opportunity.

Other brief entertainment reviews:

Once - incredible musical. I fell completely in love.

Superbad - funny, funny, funny shit. OMG I laughed soooooo much. A must own.

Live Free or Die Hard - Very enjoyable action. It exceeded my expectations. Bruce still has it.

Reign Over Me - Sad, meaningful, great character development and acting. It made me cry.

Away From Her - Also very sad but an honest look at alzheimers. Julie Christie is fantastic and Sarah Polley knocks her directorial debut outta the park.

Stardust - Very cute fantasy yarn. What makes it stand out are the secondary performances, notably De Niro.

Still have a handful of 2007 flicks to get through before I can make my top 10 list. Soon I promise.
